The 13th Amendment

The 13th Amendment

I wanted to give a shout out to a documentary feature that was my pick for the Oscars, and a film I think everyone has a duty to watch, especially in lieu of the political climate (#circus) in the US today.

If you’ve already seen the documentary 13th by Ava DuVernay you would have sat through the same incredulous couple of hours I did. Besides the shear insanity of how we have shepherded society to this point, I was struck by how many knowledgeable and informed people we have in this very same society. The interviews with the activists, academics and historians in the film truly moved me.  What an amazing group of thinkers, and people.

My overwhelming thought throughout the film was ‘why are they not running the country?’ Are they even called upon for opinion and council when presidents, senators or parliamentarians pass new legislation that puts human rights and progress back decades?

The saying “History is written by those in power” could not be more aptly demonstrated than through this stunning piece of storytelling. Do humanity a favour. Watch it.

13th is available through Netflix (View Trailer)
